In this trade, it isn’t always “easy” to be sustainable, however it is something that is so important to us at Cannock CID.
We are proud to have recently worked with Staffordshire University on a Net Zero Pathfinder project, supporting us in taking steps towards Net Zero targets. This project is a 12-week fully funded programme delivered in partnership with Cannock Chase District Council. We worked with a trained University of Staffordshire graduate (Innovation Consultant) and one of the University’s expert academics throughout the duration of the project.
We are pleased to share that we have a number of current good practices in place:
Renewable Energy Supplier
Cannock CID sources its energy from Octopus Energy, a renewable energy supplier, significantly reducing its carbon footprint associated with energy consumption.
Electric Forklifts
Our full fleet of forklifts are electric, lowering emissions compared to traditional diesel or petrol alternatives.
Transport
Although the majority of our carbon footprint is generated by our vehicles due to the nature of the business, our 3 DAF trucks were voted Green Truck of the Year in 2023. It was important to us to invest in more eco-friendly vehicles while still maintaining high performance that enables us to continue to offer an excellent service.
We utilise a software to optimize delivery routes, effectively reducing fuel consumption, emissions, and transportation costs by combining delivery and supplier pick-up trips.
Efficient Material Storage
Many materials at CID can be stored outside without special heating or cooling, minimising energy consumption and the environmental impact of controlled storage environments. This is one of the things that we consider when looking for suppliers.
Waste Recycling Programs
Cannock CID’s waste is collected by a carbon neutral company on a weekly basis, and the co-mingled waste is sorted at a state-of-the-art recycling facility. This means that we can prevent recyclable materials being disposed of with general waste.
We participate in recycling programs with major suppliers, such as British Gypsum, enhancing sustainable waste management and supporting a circular economy. We work with The Pallet Loop in association with British Gypsum to have our pallets collected and reused.
Following the Net Zero Pathfinder Project, we have set some targets going forward which will allow us to further improve our carbon footprint, make the business more environmentally sustainable, and work towards “Net Zero”, all while maintaining and improving the high standards of Cannock CID and our services.
